Messing is een goudkleurige koper-zink legering. De kleur hangt af van de hoeveelheid koper. Messing 85 heeft een donkere gouden kleur en wordt soms ook rood koper genoemd, Messing 70 is eerder geelgoud en Messing 63 heeft een neutrale gouden kleur. Door oxidatie worden messing munten na verloop van tijd bruin van kleur.
Door de gunstige prijs en beschikbaarheid van het materiaal, is dit het meest gebruikte materiaal voor betaalautomaten. Het is een roestvrij materiaal en daardoor uitermate geschikt voor een vochtige omgeving als zwembaden en car washes.
